Day 3: Kalinago Barana Aute, Jaco Steps & Spanny Falls

The Kalinago, once referred to as the Caribs, have a deep-rooted history in Dominica. We will learn a bit about their culture, heritage and traditional way of life. We will also learn about Kalinago history in Dominica as we watch traditional methods of basket weaving with Larouma Reeds, baking cassava bread and canoe building. Next, we’ll step back in time as you walk through Jaco Flats, an encampment of historic importance. This encampment was built by Jaco in order to help lead other escaped slaves to freedom. The Maroons used this area to hide from British soldiers during the mid-18th century. As we descend the hand carved stone steps leading to the river, you will be walking in the footsteps of the Maroons who fought so hard for their freedom.  Once you reach the bottom of the steps, jump into the river and admire the beautiful nature around you. Next, we will have lunch before visiting Spanny Falls, an easy-to- access waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation in the heart of the rainforest.

Day 4: Trafalgar Falls, TiTou Gorge & Champagne Reef

After breakfast, we will begin the ride to Roseau Valley to visit Trafalgar Falls, also known as mama & papa falls. The tallest waterfall on the left is “papa” at 125 ft. and the one on the right is “mama” at 75 ft. Take your shoes off and relax in the river before we head to TiTou Gorge. Once at Ti Tou Gorge, you will get a chance to swim in the same location where a part of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed. Next, we’ll sit down for a tasty local lunch and relax before our snorkel adventure at Champagne Reef.  This is a special reef that makes you feel as if you’re swimming in a glass of champagne. The bubbles are created by the volcanic vents lying just below the sea floor. Grab your snorkel and go check out all the colorful fish that live here!
